What is a Domain Name?
A Domain Name is an alias name that points to an IP
Address. For example, when someone wants to find your web site on the
Internet, they can enter www.yourname.com instead of 208.165.64.100.
How do I move a Domain Name?
I. Go to
http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/makechanges/domain.mod
and fill out the online form. (Note, this may be another
registrar if you used a different one to sign up with.)
A. Enter Your E-mail Address and Domain Name.
If your E-mail address is the same as the Admin Contact's E-mail
address for your domain name, you can send an Ack in the InterNIC
verification E-mail message and they will (should) move your domain
name.
B. Select "Modify Existing Domain."
C. Follow the instructions and use the following:
1. Use the NIC Handle "BRD2-GANDI" for
the Technical Contact
2. Use the following nameservers:
a. NS.DOMAINNAMESERVERS.NET
66.253.126.254
b. NS2.DOMAINNAMESERVERS.NET
66.253.127.254
II. When you receive the filled out InterNIC
form, send it to:
hostmaster@internic.net.
III. When you receive the NIC Tracking Number
back from the InterNIC, you can begin your transfer.
IV. If you have e-mail access to the Admin
Contact for your domain name, you must send the InterNIC the proper
acknowledgement (Ack) that you agree. Just follow the Instructions on
this second e-mail message that you receive from the InterNIC about your
site.
Otherwise you will have to send a fax to the
InterNIC. If you are a company, you will have to send the fax on
company letterhead and include your signature, your title as an officer
of the company, and your InterNIC tracking number. If you are an
individual, you will have to send a copy of your drivers license, your
signature, and your InterNIC tracking number.
The fax should read something like this:
|
Dear InterNIC,
Please move my
domain name as requested in tracking number NIC-YYMMDD.#####
(<--insert your tracking number here). I need this move done
quickly and would appreciate your prompt attention.
Sincerely,
(<--insert your
name, signature, and title here) |
V. It is important that you call the InterNIC an hour or so
after sending the fax or a few hours after sending the e-mail request.

II. When you receive the filled out InterNIC
form, send it to:

How long does it take for my Domain Name to be
visible on the Internet?
It usually takes about 3 to 4 business days before your
domain name is visible to the Internet at-large. This time may vary
depending upon the amount of domains that the InterNIC must process
during that time. The Internic controls all domain name registrations
and if you wish to expidite your registration or transfer, you can fax
your request to them at: (703) 742-9552. Once
the Internic shows that your domain name has been transfered to point to
us, it can take an additional 1 to 2 days for the domain name to be
recognized by the Internet at-large because the domain name may be
cached with an old IP Address at the ISP level.
If you use your site's IP Address instead of the domian name, you can
setup and view your site immediately on our servers.
What is a NIC Handle?
A NIC Handle is a code that InterNIC uses to uniquely
identify people with Domain Names.
What extension can I have on the end of my
Domain Name?
The most common domain name extensions are
com, net, and org. The most common extension is the .com. If that
domain is not available, you can use net or org.
InterNIC requires you to have an existing email account
through a local Internet Service Provider. Also, you need to have a
server in which to put your domain name. Always make sure that your
domain name is available before trying to register that name.
Will InterNIC bill me directly?
Yes, the InterNIC will bill you at the address
or e-mail address you specify on the registration form as the billing
contact.
